Welcome

Lou Northway CertVNECC NCert(Anaesth) RVN

I'm a job-loving  Registered Veterinary Nurse based in the UK.

I qualified in 2009 and have had a hugely fulfilling career as an RVN so far.

I created a social media page aimed specifically at Veterinary Nurses & Technicians back in January 2018 as I wanted to inspire fellow nurses to champion the bits of their job they love the most and find their niche. I believe that finding your niche helps you stay motivated in practice!

I would confidently say that I’m one of the most job-loving Registered Veterinary Nurses you will ever meet. I've been qualified for 11 years and I’ve worked in practice for the past 16 years - my whole adult life. I still absolutely adore by job. I truly eat, sleep and breathe veterinary nursing..it's my full time job...and now also my full time hobby.

My main interests are emergency & critical care nursing, anaesthesia, analgesia, quality improvement, motivation, teamwork, collaboration and nurse empowerment..... so quite a lot of my content is based around these areas.

Some of my favourite aspects my job is building relationships with pet owners... knowing my patients really well... my patients loving me in return...and working as part of a motivated, collaborative team.

Where am I based?

My current practice is a very busy, large first opinion practice in Buckinghamshire. I’m super fortunate as they have always been extremely supportive of my #NurseGoals and ambitions. They have supported my participation and completion of the Nursing certificate in emergency & critical care (CertVNECC) and the nurses certificate in anaesthesia NCert(Anaesth) - What's next? Who knows!?

Why do I still love my job so much?

One of the main reasons I still enjoy my job so much is because of my team & the culture of my practice. We have a very open learning environment and the views & experience of the nursing team are valued just as much as others. We are fully utilised and encouraged to progress in practice. ALL nurses deserve this and should be pushing for a #ShoulderToShoulder collaborative ethos. Nurses should feel PROUD & VALUED.

I would love all nurses to feel valued and enjoy their job, just as much as I still love mine.

My current role

I am currently clinical nurse lead in my practice and I am responsible for;

  • Quality improvement & clinical governance proceedings
  • Staff training & mentoring in my areas of interest
  • The auditing, reviewing and adaptation of our clinical nursing protocols.

#EmbraceYourInnerGeek

I find CPD extremely motivating and rewarding and I am always keen to spread my enthusiasm. Sharing CPD knowledge has such a positive impact on your team, and more importantly - your patients. The past 18 months I have started speaking internationally in my areas of interest to fellow Veterinary Nurses which I absolutely adore! I also really enjoy engaging with and organising educational events for pet owners.

My extra-curricular nursing activities

Alongside my full time role in practice I am a BVNA (The British Veterinary Nursing Association) council member, VN Futures Career Progression working group member & on the editorial board of RCVS Evidence (the journal of RCVS Knowledge)

I now also lecture internationally to nurses in my areas of interest which I really enjoy.

I'm always somewhere doing something nurse-related!

Why am I here?

  • Raise awareness of #whatvnsdo
  • Provide daily Veterinary Nursing hints, tips & CPD via my social media pages
  • Share links to useful resources & Veterinary Nursing news
  • Provide CPD to fellow veterinary professionals
  • Motivate and inspire nurses to find their ‘niche’
  • Inspire nurses to aim for #GoldStandard patient care where ever they work
  • Provide support to Student Veterinary Nurses

Thank you for your support & for stopping by,

Lou
